Why do you do what you do?

Why do I do what I do?  Today I had to send in my notes of why I should be chosen as the next chairman of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors committee.  This was perhaps one of the hardest emails I had to compose in a long time.  Why do I want to be the next chairperson of this group of volunteers within the Chamber of Commerce here in the Stampede City?  Why do I?

I got thinking perhaps about the exposure Bulletproof InfoTech would receive within the Chamber, was this important?  No, not for this role.  Was it the fact that I can get to know people inside the Chamber at a whole new level?  Perhaps, only if it is in the course of my service in this role.  So why do I want to serve as the committee chair?

Why do I do what I do?

I started to reflect on lessons learned over the past few years, few months, few weeks and even in the past few days.  It is really about service.  Service to my colleagues, service to the community, service to those to whom I have yet to meet and service to my family.  This is why I am striving for this role, not for the spotlight, not for the glamour…but for the service.  Got me thinking about another leader who washed the feet of His followers.

Why do you do what you do?

Are you in it for the service?  Are you in it for the spotlight?  Is there another reason why you get up in the morning?  You see, I am still driven by recognition and I will always be.  The challenge with this comes when it is used for vain, you see I was once like that and this ugly turtle every once in a while tries to show its ugly head.  Recognition is not a bad thing when used properly.  I have learned like I am sure you have, when good things happen praise the team around you, when things go wrong you only have one butt to kick and that is your own.

Why do I get up in the morning?  It is for the opportunity to serve the team at Bulletproof, to serve those in our community, to serve the members of HTG, to serve God and equally as important, to serve my family.
