When are you making your version of Thriller?

I reflect back on what I was doing on Thursday when I first heard about the “King of Pop” has died, I will always remember hearing about it first from the staff at Cindy Woo’s, a Chiropractor in SW Calgary.  Just like 1977 on August 16th when the “King of Rock and Roll” passed, I knew exactly what I was doing and where I was.  There are these moments like remember that I was driving down Bow Trail in Calgary near Shaganappi Golf Course on my way to have breakfast with my buddy Chuck when the news broke about 9/11.  We all have these moments in our life that we have vivid memory of exactly where we were and what we were doing when major things occurred in the world or in our life.

Michael Jackson turned the video world upside down when he released his “still number one all-time record” Thriller.  I personally think that this record is awesome.  I really enjoyed some of Michael’s work include is duet with Paul McCartney on “Say, Say, Say”.  Video killed the radio star when Michael released Thriller.  It was a critical turning point in video music.  Michael combined dance with music and made music video more than just people lip syncing and playing air guitar.

When are we going to do something that changes an industry?

What does this take to occur?

Malcolm Gladwell’s Tipping Point book sort of touches on this.  When does an event in the world, a product or a service become so popular that it takes a mind of its own and then grows because of grass roots or viral type behaviours in the marketplace.  I think as small business owners in Calgary we are all looking for this to happen.  When our services become so popular they sell themselves and need less interaction from us.

This has gotten me pondering on what I need to do next to create our own Thriller experience.
