Did Larry King understand the secret of networking?

Blackberry Training in Alberta

Over the past couple of days my great friend, Darci LaRoque from Swirl Solutions was in town to instruct two days of Blackberry training for business owners, managers, sales professionals and users of the Research in Motion SmartPhone.  Darci and I go back a number of years and it is funny how we linked up.  She had an article that ran in the Calgary Herald a while back, I saw it one Saturday and decided to call her and we have been great friends ever since.  We are going to running another Blackberry course in October combined with some teasers over the summer, check out the Bulletproof InfoTech Website for more information.

This got me thinking about what allowed me to reach some early success in my career, it has to do with Larry King!

Now what does Larry King have to do with this?

Before you jump to any conclusions, it is not Larry King from CNN.  I am talking about the Larry King from the hit TV show “King of Kensington”.  If you are not aware of this cult TV show from Canadian TV history, watch the opening that I managed to find on YouTube.  Thanks to Youtube for preserving these great memories.

I remember watching this show growing up as a young boy in Niagara Falls, Ontario, I was 11 when it went off the air.  We would watch it and laugh so hard.  Starring Al Waxman, this show featured the Kensington Area of Toronto and the multicultural marketplace allowing this special part of Hogtown to shine in glory.  In the show, Larry King was a true Go-Giver, and maybe secretly the source of inspiration behind Bob’s book (Don’t think so).  He was the people’s champion, the king without a bark.  From what I remember, everyone like him because he cared for the people of the Kensington area.

Larry didn’t go out of his way to be well liked throughout Toronto, or the Province of Ontario.  He didn’t seek national glory or try to light the international world on fire, he focused on his small little suburb of Toronto.  Everyone knew him, everyone cared for him because put their needs first and was simply just a person with no other agenda.  Sure, this was just a TV show, however the message is loud and clear.

He just cared about the folks in the area that he served.  He was a servant leader.  He stood up for those who needed help, those who were in the neighbourhood, those not as well off as others and those who just needed some love.  A true servant leader!  We can all learn something from this show.

It is not about “I”, it is about “YOU”.

Living in the Limelight

I chased the international spotlight, I tried to be liked across the country and I definitely lost focus on my little area of the world here in Southern Alberta.  Now with Bulletproof I am blessed to have two core areas to work in and bring them together as one.  Caring for the needs of the business community in Southern and Central Alberta, for now.  Who knows what the future will bring but for now, it is my turn to be Larry King.

I know I have said it before, but darn it, this time I mean it…time to focus back on Calgary and Red Deer ONLY!
