In Calgary we are in Canada’s Oil Capital.
I love being in the Oil patch and the rush it gives me as a business owner providing quality IT solutions to the Canadian Oil and Gas and Energy sector. I was watching TV and saw the shortened version of Shell’s latest commercial on horizontal drilling. The secret to the commercial is very clear if you just watch for it.
Look for solutions in the unlikeliest of places. In the commercial the Oil Executive from Shell is looking for a solution that will be able to reach pockets of oil without drilling the bottom out of the sea floor. The son gives the father the insight of a solution from a bendy straw. Pretty cool.
Keep your eyes open all the time, no matter what you do and what position you are in at the company you work at. Companies struggle when eyes are closed and the big picture is not being observed. It is kind of like being a race horse with blinders on. We must as business owners, managers, leaders or executives always be watching for insight from all interactions.

Check out the 9 minute commercial and watch for the hints of how to fight writer’s block and the importance of a change of scenery. This is why I head to the mountains once a month without a Blackberry or any technology, just a notebook and a full Starbucks card.
Here is a tip for you, when someone from your firm brings something forward, recognize it and thank them as well. If it brings substantial revenue or cost savings, you know something reward that person with a portion of the additional revenue or cost savings.
