The mattress won today

Greetings from Sheridan, Wyoming.  We are on our second last day of travelling on our “Go-Giver” tour 2008 which saw us from through Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming then today into Montana.

I wanted to get up this morning for a run to get back into the routine of doing some physical activity, however over the past few days the mattress has won the battle over the mind.  I am sure I have gained a tonne of body mass over this trip.  I can feel it.  Back to the gym on Friday I guess.

Yesterday we hit some sites in southwestern South Dakota of course Mt. Rushmore was the first stop.  It was great to see Mt. Rushmore and share the experience with my family.  It was a great day, the sun shined throughout the entire visit and the temperature was perfect.  It was in the low 90′s and very comfortable to walk the Presidential trail and even walk the same pathway as they did in the “National Treasure” movie.  See our national treasure here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdIi6TUYZ3s

After we were done at Mt. Rushmore, we elected to start our next leg of our journey by hitting US-16 instead of taking I-90.  It was nice to just drive on a slower road and nice pace.  Too often in live we try to get to point A to B the fastest way possible and we miss the jewels that are out there.  And for us, this jewel was the Jewel Cave National Monument.  If we went to the Interstate, we would have missed this.

The Jewel Cave is the second largest cave in North America, the largest cave known today is the Mammoth Cave in North Caroline.  The interesting thing that Andy Armstrong, our Park Ranger told us is that with the Jewel Cave is only about 2 or 3% explored to date.  They have a scientific way to figure out how much is left with a mechanism of air volume etc.  Check out our video here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i60A1o72D20.

So the lesson for today is to slow down and enjoy what is going on around you.  Sometimes the fastest way isn’t the best way.  Sometimes the slower road and the road less travelled has some real gems for all of us to see.  You can miss alot at 80 MPH where you can see a tremendous amount of what life has to offer at 55 MPH and end up enriched and the same destination.
