The world is working on this for me, I have received several emails and responses about my posting from yesterday. Showing up in all areas of life is the key factor to success. Being present in every area. Not just being, showing up, participating and offering some interaction between yourself and the other group or person.
Many times us techie (I mean the industry) show up, and then we have our email open, blackberries on – turn these things off! If you are in a conference, briefing, meeting or whatever – the most important person is the person in front of you. Yes, I am one of those people that need to do this as well. I may stop carrying my blackberry with me at conferences and other type of events.
I just finished re-reading the “4 Hour Work Week” by Timothy Ferriss, I highly recommend that all IT Professionals read this book. Why? Simple, it helps us get our heads around – showing up when needed, having a great team with you, and also getting away in life. To trust those around you to get the job done. Like I mentioned the other today, getting away and not being present are two different beasts. I can be 2000 miles away and still be present. This book also helps us get our heads around using email, telephone and then face to face meetings as a way to get things done.
I have realized that in order to be present in what you do, you need a good mentor and coach, I will be redefining this support team over the next few months to aid in this part of my life, you see, all professionals need a mentor or coach.
