Today is the day where many people go out to hit the stores in droves and add additional debt onto their credit cards buying up all the bargains that retailers put on after the Christmas season. I am intrigued by the meaning of Boxing Day, the feast of St. Stephen.
Boxing Day is a holiday celebrates throughout the Commonwealth (United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand plus many more former countries that were once part of the British Empire).
So what is Boxing Day? Traditionally Boxing Day is the day after Christmas where employers would hand out gifts to their employees (Now I know where employees expect Christmas bonuses now comes from).
There are a number of different traditions depending on where you live, check them out here on Wikipedia.
On the topic of traditions – what traditions do you have? What traditions do you and your family follow every year? Are you just starting to develop your own traditions?
Yesterday we spent Christmas Day doing a number of things, some of which I could classify as early traditions or traditions in development. We had the Pastor from our Church (First Lutheran) over with her husband for coffee and some fellowship. I really enjoyed this time together as we explored what Jesus’ birth meant to us.
Later in the evening we made the trip to Bowness to visit with my brother in law and his family for dinner. This was another special time of fellowship with his family. The family is growing rapidly with new babies emerging every year. This is truly wonderful to see the family expanding with new life and hope for the future.
Enjoy your Boxing Day and if you are in the United States – enjoy your day!
